High-performance and Passive House construction is a specialised part of what we do at Woolley Constructions. Whether it is retrofitting an existing home or delivering a new build, our focus is on creating homes that are healthier, more comfortable, more durable and significantly more energy efficient than standard construction.
We do not offer conventional volume-style new builds, or architectural homes where the focus is primarily on finishes and aesthetics rather than the quality of the building envelope and construction methodology itself.
The only new homes we take on are high-performance or Passive House new builds designed around building science, durability, energy efficiency and long-term performance.
While the terms are often used together, there is an important difference between a high-performance home and a certified Passive House.
A high-performance home applies many of the same principles as Passive House construction, including improved insulation, airtightness, moisture management, glazing performance and ventilation. The goal is to dramatically improve comfort, efficiency and durability compared to standard Australian construction.
A Passive House new build takes this even further. Passive House is a globally recognised performance standard with strict measurable targets around energy use, airtightness, indoor air quality and thermal comfort. These homes require significantly greater detailing, modelling and quality control throughout the design and construction process.
Not every project needs to achieve Passive House certification to benefit from high-performance construction principles. In many cases, clients choose a high-performance outcome that balances performance goals, budget and project scope while still delivering substantial improvements to the way the home performs.
A high-performance retrofit can also be applied to almost any style or era of home. Whether it is a pre-war Queenslander, a post-war home or a more contemporary build, the goal remains the same: improving how the home performs without compromising the way it looks, feels or functions.
Through carefully considered upgrades, we can dramatically improve thermal performance, comfort and energy efficiency while addressing many of the issues common in Australian homes, including heat gain, poor insulation, condensation and uncontrolled air leakage.
This often includes upgrades to insulation, airtightness, moisture management, ventilation, glazing and thermal performance, integrated into renovation, extension or remedial works.
For both high-performance and Passive House new builds, careful detailing and execution matter. Small mistakes can significantly impact performance outcomes, which is why experience, planning and quality control are critical throughout the build.
